Teacher’s Aide Professional Program

Teaching in a classroom of young students

Teacher’s aides, also known as teaching assistants, work with and under the supervision of a licensed teacher. Teacher’s aides may work with small groups of students and report back any specific needs that they identify. Teacher’s aides may also work with special education students. This could be in a normal classroom where they provide extra support to a student, or this could be in a special education classroom. The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists common duties of teacher’s aides including:

  • Reinforcing lessons by reviewing material with students one-on-one or in small groups

  • Following school and classroom rules to teach students proper behavior

  • Helping teachers with recordkeeping, such as taking attendance and calculating grades

  • Getting equipment or materials ready to help teachers prepare for lessons

  • Supervising students outside of the classroom, such as between classes, during lunch and recess, and on field trips

The majority of teacher’s aides work in public elementary schools but some work in childcare centers and private school systems. Teacher’s aides must be able to work well with children. Having a passion for children is imperative. Working with children requires a variety of skills including patience, communication skills, interpersonal skills and resourcefulness. The Classroom Partnership names the top six qualities they believe to be important in a teacher’s aide or assistant.

·         They’re good with children-teacher’s aides need to understand how children develop and learn. They understand that each child is different and has a learning style and they work to adapt to keep children learning effectively.

·         Flexible and adaptable- children can be unpredictable and when trying to teach them, they may not be prepared to learn a certain way. A great teacher’s aide will adapt to the child or group of children and redirect the lesson plan.

·         Solid literacy and numeracy skills- having knowledge of literacy and numeracy skills is one thing, but a teacher’s aide must be able to effectively teach these skills to children.

·         Ability to communicate effectively- teacher’s aides do not only communicate with students, but with parents and guardians as well.

·         Teaching assistants are prepared- they must have lesson plans and activities planned beforehand. Having a plan for the week ahead can help them plan how they will deliver messages and lessons to children. Doing so without a plan can be less effective.

·         They’re able to provide effective feedback- a teacher’s aide can help identify if a child is falling behind in a subject. They are also able to identify if a child is excelling in a certain area and becoming bored. They report this back to the teacher and plan remediation or come up with new challenges for children who are ahead.
