Medical billers and coders are involved in processing insurance claims for diagnoses and treatments provided by physicians and other medical personnel. They code both the diagnosis and request payments from the patient’s insurance company. Accurate billing and coding is imperative as it affects the reimbursement provided to the office or hospital in which they work.

Some of the roles and responsibilities of a medical biller and coder include the following, according to the AAPC:

• Review clinical statements and assign the standard codes including CPT®, ICD-10-CM and HCPCS Level 2
• Submit claims to insurance companies
• Medical billers translate healthcare services into medical billing claims
• Medical coders translate medical records into medical codes for billing
• Medical billers follow up on the insurance claims to ensure proper payment

Medical coders read a medical record regarding patient condition and assign the medical code appropriate for what has occurred with the patient. The medical biller then follows up on that code to submit a claim to the insurance company. Billers also follow up to ensure that the claim gets paid by both the insurance and the patient if any charges are remaining. While the duties of a medical biller will vary, their main duties include, “charge entry, claims transmission, payment posting, insurance follow-up, and patient follow-up” according to AAPC.

While medical billing and medical coding are two different entities, they go hand in hand. The medical biller cannot file a claim until a medical coder applies the code to the diagnosis and treatment. This course bundle will teach you to do both. Medical billers and coders work in a variety of settings. The majority of medical coders and billers work in physician’s offices, but they also work in emergency rooms, ambulatory centers and hospitals.
