Facing Your Career Change Fears

Businesswoman staring off into distance

Do you feel stuck in a rut? Do you find satisfaction in the work you do? At the end of the day do you feel fulfilled or depleted?

We may dream of making a career change; but drag our feet, in part, because of fear of the unknown. Any change in life comes with a degree of uncertainty. Some of us feel energized by new adventures, and some are so frightened that we stay in a bad situation far longer than we should. It helps to acknowledge the fear; and to spend time examining all its nooks and crannies. Truth be told, sometimes the fear is worse than the reality. Be honest with yourself and explore what it is that is holding you back. Following these steps might help:

  1. Write down your fears. What exactly are you afraid of? Is it failure? Not having enough time or money to train for a new career? Are you worried that you won’t have enough money to pay your bills while you are making your career change? Take the time to examine each individual fear and project out and dig deeper from there. For example – take your fear of failure. Why does that frighten you? Are you afraid of disappointing yourself? Your family? Are you scared you won’t be able to go back to your old career?

  2. Answer your fear. Ask yourself, what will happen if your fears come true and how might you best prepare? If you fail, what will your next step be? To go back to your old job? To find employment in a complimentary field until you can gain more knowledge? If you don’t have enough money in the bank, what can you do to offset this? Can you cut discretionary spending for the near future? Work a side job until you have saved enough to feel comfortable branching out in your new field? Crunch the numbers, lay out a plan and do what you can to put those fears to rest!

  3. Push ahead. At some point, you have to reassure yourself that you’ve done what you can and that it’s time to test the waters. Understand that this is your journey; and that you’ve laid the groundwork for success. But remember that success can look like many different things. Even failure can be a part of success if you learn and grow from it!
